Our Mission

We see the gradebook a little differently. As a tool, shared by students, to empower learning.

It should help students monitor and own their learning. It should help teachers provide clarity and feedback. It should help rich and productive conversations flourish.

More than a gradebook, Learning Portrait® empowers a progressive way of teaching. One that focuses not on points and grades, but on mastery and learning progress.

The Team

With 25 years of experience in education, primarily with curricular programs, Jeremy loves helping teachers achieve their goals. His reverence for educators and their craft is lifelong and palpable. As he heard educators talk about implementing standards-based grading, he sought to be a part of the movement. Perhaps his old skateboarding days (which he has traded for safer golfing) instilled a spirit of progressive rebellion. He loves now supporting the educator-centered strategy of Learning Portrait®, seeing how it helps students own their learning while supporting a liberating way of teaching.

While product is important, even more important is the process - and the people. While we have varied backgrounds and varied skills, we have a shared vision. And we think that makes us a great team. - Learning Portrait

Jeff taught high school math for 35 years, every year looking at ways to get better (he’s read over 350 books about education!). He started using standards-based grading in 2012. Suddenly, students stopped asking about improving grades and started asking about how to learn specific topics. He was hooked. Jeff soon began having students rate themselves using an early version of Learning Portrait®. He now loves working with teachers on improving their craft and guiding the direction of Learning Portrait. Jeff is also an actor in a local community theatre, a director of high school theatre, a proud father of four, and a fan of golfing.

Hanna is a life-long learner who came to coding during COVID, after nearly a decade in the world of business management, as a way to combine creativity and problem-solving skills. She remembers that “ah hah! I love this! Look what I can do!”' moment when she first learned to program “Hello World!” and she hasn’t looked back since. Nearly five years later, she has developed software for everything from medical staffing to HVAC and is currently a contributor to Learning Portrait. As a learner, Hanna deeply appreciates the role of voice, opinion, feedback and input - and loves that Learning Portrait embraces these notions. When not programming, Hanna is typically diving into a hobby. She is an avid ultramarathoner, having gone 100 miles in under 24 hours, and an avid reader who aims for 70 books a year. She also dabbles in various hobbies including woodburning, crochet, drawing, embroidering, working with polymer clay.

Daniel took a Java course years ago that relit the spark he first felt in 5th grade when he learned LOGO. Over a decade later, Daniel continues to find joy in software development. While he has created solutions across several industries, he has a special place in his heart for educational software. Daniel loves learning, education and mentoring - to see the excitement people have when they start solving problems is very satisfying for him. With Learning Portrait in particular, Daniel loves the idea of being able help the evolution of how we assess people in their learning. When not programming, Daniel likes to get outside. Often that means running 30 to 100 miles a week, as well as frequent hiking and kayaking. Daniel's longest run was 100K. He loves running because there is always something to solve - and he finds that finishing something that takes hours is always a great feeling. Daniel also manages a book club that’s been going strong since COVID.
