Here’s what we’re building together

After years of frustration with traditional gradebooks, we've created something different. We're teachers who've lived the frustration of wrestling with a gradebook, trying to make it match what actually happens classrooms.

We're a team of educators with over 100 years of combined classroom experience. Together, we've lived the daily reality of teaching and understand exactly why traditional gradebooks fail both teachers and students.

Learning Portrait transforms grading from score collection to learning conversations, and we want you to be part of it.

See the three screens that change everything

1. The Teacher Dashboard — Use your language

Quick class-level view showing both attainment and growth. Create rubrics in your words. See who needs support at a glance. Make teaching decisions based on real learning data, not averaged points.

Look for these key features:

  • Custom ratings (top row) — No more translating to percentages.

  • Growth indicators (arrows/icons) — See who's improving, not just current level.

  • Color-coded at-a-glance view — Instantly identify students needing support.

2. The Student View — Students own their learning

"How am I doing?" finally has a clear answer. Students see exactly what's expected and where they stand—no points, no percentages, just learning progress. They self-assess, then see teacher feedback. No grade mysteries—just honest dialogue about learning progress.

What students actually see:

  • Friendly visual ratings — Calming, simple design that reduces grade anxiety.

  • Learning objectives, not assignments — Focus shifts to "I need to work on punctuation."

  • Self-rating buttons — Students assess themselves and see teacher feedback.

3. The Portrait — Everyone sees the whole picture

Evidence meets expectations. Students upload their work, see clear rubrics, and rate themselves before seeing teacher feedback. Comments create dialogue, not judgment. This is where learning becomes visible and growth becomes tangible.

The learning conversation hub:

  • Evidence upload area — Students submit work directly to objectives.

  • Side-by-side ratings — Compare student self-assessment with teacher feedback.

  • Comment threads — Real dialogue about learning, not just grades.

About Learning Portrait

After decades in education—as teachers, administrators, and researchers—we couldn't watch another talented educator spend Sunday nights building spreadsheets just to make their gradebook work.

25 years in education as teacher, instructional coach, leadership coach and administrator. Founded Learning Portrait to solve the disconnect between how we know students learn best and the tools we're forced to use.

35 years teaching high school math. Started standards-based grading in 2012 and never looked back. Students stopped asking "what's my grade?" and started asking "how do I learn this?" An avid reader, Jeff has read over 325 books on education alone.

35 years in education, most as a teacher and then many as an administrator. Author of two books on classroom communities and inquiry-based learning. Passionate about creating inclusive environments and systems.

25 years teaching math and science. 15 years coaching teachers. Author of two books on creating communities of self-directed learners. Passionate about lots of things - student self-awareness and growth chief among them.

Together, we're building the tool we wished we had.

Our mission is simple: Create a gradebook that enhances learning. We've lived the frustration, and we're building the solution.
